How do you edit?

I identify audience and purpose.

Every document has a job to do, but not all of them do it well. The most common trap that even a well-intentioned writer can fall into is not adequately anticipating her reader’s needs. My critical training enables me to quickly find and effectively fix that costly mistake.

I start by asking you questions. In order to do my job well,  we both need to understand a precise audience and a specific purpose for your document, whether it is a mass email or an annual report. When we have identified your audience and purpose, I get to work tailoring your document.

I tailor and clarify.

My job is to make your document speak directly to your reader. I use plain language strategies to improve your content. Plain language is a set of style guidelines for creating “communication your audience can understand the first time they read or hear it.” I rewrite and reorganize your publications, web content, internal reports, manuals, and social media to get your message across quickly and effectively.

I meet your needs.

I offer two levels of editing. You can choose either or both, depending on what you need.

  1. Stylistic: At this level, I fix grammar, mechanics, and citations. I rewrite sentences to clarify your meaning, create a consistent tone, and emphasize important points. I also make minor improvements to the document design.
  2. Developmental: At this level, I make changes to the document’s organization so that information is presented logically to your reader. I make major changes, as needed, to improve the document design so that it is easy to navigate and understand, even if your reader is skimming.

What are your rates?

Following rates the The Editorial Freelancer’s Association recommends, my hourly editing rates are:

  • stylistic: $40
  • developmental: $60

What kinds of projects can you do? Who do you work with?

I specialize in short to medium-length documents and professional presentations. This includes:

  • reports
  • briefing papers
  • mass emails
  • user, training, or safety manuals
  • fundraising materials
  • brochures and advertisements
  • posters and signs
  • articles and essays
  • web content
  • social media
  • PowerPoint presentations

Book-length projects are also welcome, but require a longer lead time.  Contact me for more information.

Do I need an editor?

Maybe not. But all writing benefits from feedback. The most common mistake people make is writing from their own perspective, not their reader’s perspective. That’s only natural. Unfortunately, unlearning that habit and fixing that mistake can be time consuming and costly efforts. I make it easier for you by providing an outsider’s perspective tempered by years of rigorous academic training.

How long does editing take?

With enough notice (at least two weeks before your deadline), I’m generally pretty fast. I can accommodate rush requests for an additional fee.

What are my payment options?

I prefer PayPal or credit card.
